Cameron Smith has continued to work his way through the field at the World Golf Championship’s Mexico Championship, but Dustin Johnson seems destined to run away with the $US10 million event.
Queenslander Smith has a chance to push his world ranking higher and enhance his Presidents Cup prospects tomorrow, sitting tied-third in a white hot field in Mexico City.
But seven shots back from Johnson’s 16-under par it would take something special to overhaul the former world No. 1.
The American, who is No. 3 on the world rankings behind Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka, is on track to regain the top billing that he held most recently toward the end of last year.
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy at 12-under is the most obvious candidate to challenge him.
Smith shot a third-round 68 to go with 69-67 on Thursday and Friday and continues to earn plaudits for his short game. Currently ranked 28th in the world, he is enjoying his leap into the top 30 for the first time, an event which occured late in 2018.
Fellow-Queenslander Jake McLeod faded with a third-round 76 and both Matt Millar and Marc Leishman are well back in the no-cut field.
Meanwhile in Brisbane, Daniel Nisbet leads the Queensland PGA Championship by two shots going into the final round today.
