Smith too good in North Carolina

Current Women’s Australian Amateur champion Kristie Smith took her career to a new level on Sunday after winning the 106th North & South Amateur championship at Pinehurst. Smith defeated Massachusetts Chelsea Curtis for the coveted Putterboy trophy after seeing off Marika Lendl and Blair Lamb in the quarter and semi finals. Smith, with an Australian flag on her cheek, opened the final with par and took the lead after Smith s bogey. Smith rallied with a sharp birdie putt on the fifth and a par on the seventh to assume control of the match. A bogey on the seventh from Curtis and another birdie from Smith on the ninth saw her 2-up at the turn. The girls traded bogeys on the back nine, ending the morning s play on the 17th hole with Smith sitting at 2-up. As afternoon play began, Curtis birdie and Smith s par took the match back to 1-up. But consecutive bogeys from Curtis on the 21st and 22nd holes left the door open and Smith took full advantage, saving par and then finding the cup on four-foot eagle putt to turn her lead into 3-up. Smith continued with consistent pars and wrapped her victory, 8 & 7, with pars on the 28th and 29th holes to Curtis consecutive bogeys.
