Smith wins Queensland Men’s Stroke Play

Courtesy: Golf Queensland Royal Queensland&aposs Cameron Smith has won the 2010 Queensland Men&aposs Stroke Play Championship on the eighth play-off hole against Sydney&aposs Brett Drewitt at Headland Golf Club. With the play-off suspended after six holes due to fading light last evening, both players recommenced their battle at 7.30am this morning off Headland&aposs first tee. This mornings action wasn&apost to feature the drama of the previous evening however, with Drewitt surrendering his challenge with a three-putt bogey on hole 2, and Smith securing his par and the Stroke Play title. Following a remarkable days golf yesterday at Headland, Smith and Dewitt had finished the championship tied on 12-under par (276), after both had failed to assert themselves in the afternoon&aposs final round in carding 2-over par scores of 74. Six playoff holes, including one played under lights on Headland&aposs par-3 18th hole, failed to find a winner and pushed the contest into a fifth day. The Men&aposs Stroke Play Championship is the first in what promises to be many senior men&aposs titles for the 16-year Smith, who has won the last two Queensland Boy&aposs Amateur titles. He was also the defeated finalist at the 2009 Queensland Men&aposs Amateur, having fought an epic contest over 34 holes with eventually winner Daniel Nisbet. Earlier this year Smith represented Australia in the Trans-Tasman Cup series against New Zealand. The top 16 available qualifiers from the Queensland Men&aposs Stroke Play Championship will move onto the Queensland Men&aposs Amateur Championship match play, which starts at Bribie&aposs Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club on Tuesday 4 May.
