John Smoljko has secured the final Isuzu Queensland Open Regional qualifying exemption after winning the Far North Queensland Golf Championship on the weekend.
The tight Mossman Golf Club layout proved a challenge for golfers across the field with the weather presenting perfect scoring conditions.
In the open category, Smoljko opened with a 4-under 68 to clasp a 4-shot lead over Jake Perkins (El Arish Country Club) heading in to the final 18-holes. A second round 2-over 74 was enough to grab the title, and a start in the Isuzu Queensland Open to be played in October.
“It was a little bit windy, so conditions were quite tough. Around the green was quite sticky. It was a tough test of golf. I think yesterday my front nine was the difference,” Smoljko said.
Smoljko, a former Mareeba Golf Club member only one hour south of Mossman, travelled from home club Ryde Parramatta in New South Wales to contest the championship.
“This is a dream come true for me, I’m absolutely stoked. It’s my old stomping ground (The Brisbane Golf Club) so it should be fantastic.”
The 2017 Isuzu Queensland Open will be played at The Brisbane Golf Club from 26 – 29 October 2017.
