Golf NSW Men’s Interstate Team Captain Travis Smyth has posted a confidence inspiring 4-under par 66 in the first round of the Nexus Risk TSA Group Western Australia Open at the Western Australian Golf Club in Perth today.

Just behind Smyth sits his NSW Team Mates, Cameron Davis and Harrison Endycott, who both posted impressive sub par rounds to begin the championship. Davis shot a 3-under par 67 to be sitting in tied 10th position, and Harrison Endycott posted a tidy 2-under par 68 to sitting tied 18th.

Smyth however, sits nicely in equal 5th position only a couple of shots shy of the leaders after an impressive 5 birdies in his afternoon round. The key to his round he felt was his accuracy from the tee and draining a couple of clutch putts coming home.

“I hit it exceptionally well from the tee today, and to go and hole a couple of clutch putts near the end, to keep it going, I’m happy.”

“I’m looking forward to my early hit off tomorrow now,” Smyth said.

Davis was solid in the morning round, and although grouped in one of the marquee tee slots with Australasian PGA Tour stars Matt Millar and Michael Long, the  Monash Country Club member and 2015 Australian Amateur Champion showed no signs of being overawed by his playing partners.

“It’s great to get off to a solid start, it was a bit tricky to control shots in the gusty wind, but I managed my game pretty well. Hopefully I can build on this round and be right there on the weekend,” said Davis.

Endycott was happy with his solid start. The Avondale member who has done little else but burn fields away in his last four major amateur starts got off to a blistering start birdieing two of his first three holes before the wind gusts made holing putts a little hard.

“It was tough out there this morning. I played pretty solid, stayed patient. It would've been nice to see a few more putts go in but there's 54 holes left,” Endycott smiled.
