Sondjaja breaks college duck in fine style

Sydney’s Ruben Sondjaja has won medallist honours at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City.

It was the first individual victory for the 20-year-old junior since he began playing for the University of Iowa State as he continues to build an impressive college golf resume.

The former Australian junior representative, a semi-finalist in the Australian Amateur Championship in 2012, fired a final-round 66 to beat University of Missouri Kansas City’s Francois Lagraulet by three strokes at 10-under-par 206 in the three-round event.

Sondjaja’s victory helped the Cyclones team tie for second in the field of 14 at 858 with rounds of 287-290-281, falling nine shots behind tournament champion Kansas (849).

In its past three tournaments, Iowa State has finished first, first and tied for second.

Next up for the Cyclones is the Big 12 Championships in Trinity, Texas, from April 29-May 1.
