Sondjaja shines in San Francisco

Former Golf NSW representative Ruben Sondjaja has made a strong start in the Trans-Miss Championship being played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The 21 year old member of Bonnie Doon Golf Club who is currently studying on a golf scholarship at the University of Iowa State, carded four birdies and an eagle in his 2-under par round of 68 to trail the first round leader, Will Zalatoris by two shots.

Sondjaja is one of only four Australians in the field of the 113-year old championship which boasts an honour role of winners including Bryson deChambeau, Bob Estes, Mark Brooks, Bob Tway, Ben Crenshaw and Jack Nicklaus.

Sondjaja has had an impressive junior year of college golf, breaking through for his first individual victory in April with medallist honours at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City.

Blake Windred of The Australian Golf Club and Victorian Blake Collyer posted 3-over par rounds of 73 to sit in a tie for 52nd, while Western Australia’s Kiran Day didn’t have the best of days on the course posting an 8-over par round of 78 to be in 127th position.
