The South Australian Men’s and Women’s State Teams to contest the 2018 Australian Interstate Teams Matches in Adelaide have been selected.
The Australian Interstate Teams Matches are Australia's premier Amateur Team Golf Championships, with the Men’s Series played in Adelaide at The Grange Golf Club 8-11 May and Women’s Series at Glenelg Golf Club 9-11 May 2018.
Eight male and six female players have been selected, with 20-year-old Billy Cawthorne from Royal Adelaide Golf Club and 17-year-old Jin-Young Yun from The Grange, named as state captains, both for the first time.
The men’s team will have four debutants, Jack Buchanan and Frank Vucic from Glenelg and Colin Coleman and 2018 Riversdale Cup champion, Jack Thompson from The Grange.
Returning players to the men’s team are last year’s Junior Captain, Jackson Kalz from Glenelg and Liam Georgiadis from The Grange, who represented SA in 2016.
Josh Hayes from Glenelg also returns for his second cap after representing SA in 2015.
The Men’s coach is Jamie Clutterham, PGA Professional at the North Adelaide golf course and will be managed by David Brand.
South Australia finished sixth in 2017 and last won the series in 1983 with the team of NeilCrafter (C), Kevin Bulbeck, David Cherry, Bill Guy, Dean Harris, Michael Haslett, Phil Roberts, Dean Wiles.
Women’s Captain Jin-Young Yun who is also the girl’s team captain, has been in solid form in recent weeks finishing 12th at both the SA Rene Erichsen Salver and The Bowra & O’Dea 72 hole Classic in WA.
16-year-old Charley Jacobs from Glenelg Golf Club will return to the team, while Caitlin Peirce (15) from Royal Adelaide will make her first senior appearance. Both players are also representing SA in the Junior Series in April.
Experienced Glenelg duo, Sarah Crocker and Elysia Yap have been selected once again with Yap set to make her sixth appearance for SA.
Caitlin Roberts will be returning for her seventh series. Roberts who captained the side in 2013 and 2014 showed consistent form to finished 15th in the Rene Erichsen.
Coaching the side is SA High Performance Director Adrian Wickstein. Wickstein was Men’s State Captain in 2008. Managing the side will be former South Australian ALPG player, Tamie Durdin.
South Australia finished sixth in 2017 and last won the Australian Women’s Interstate Teams Matches in 2006 with the team of Louise Glennon, Ebony Heard, Samantha Holt, Sarah King, Susie Mathews and Stephanie Na.
The Australian Men’s and Women’s Interstate Teams Matches are played as a round robin match play competition between South Australian, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, WA, NSW and the Northern Territory (men’s only).
Following the round robin matches, the teams finishing first and second on the ladder contest a final to determine the national champions. Women’s final to be held 10 May and men’s final 11 May.
