Spieths super shot wins

Jordan Spieth holed a bunker shot in spectacular fashion to win a playoff at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut today.

The reigning Emirates Australian Open champion and world No. 6 won his first tournament since February with one, stunning shot from 18 metres, launching into a body-bumping celebration with caddie Michael Greller.

Spieth’s birdie pipped out countryman Daniel Berger in the playoff after Berger had posted 12-under, leaving Spieth to par the 72nd hole to force a playoff. Even then, Spieth had to get up-and-down from the front-right trap at the 18th hole to force a playoff.

Spieth has won two Australian Opens including a playoff at Royal Sydney last year, and has said he intends returning to defend his title at The Australian Golf Club in November, pending a final announcement.

"Obviously, that was one for the ages,'' he said of the winning shot. "I don't know if I'll ever have a moment like that again.''

Berger was philosophical. “Jordan does Jordan things,” he said.

Of the Aussies in the field, Marc Leishman finished tied-17th, carding four consecutive rounds in the 60s and continuing his sound 2016-17 season. Leishman remains in the top 15 on the Fedex Cup points list.

Former world No. 1 Jason Day missed his second consecutive cut, meaning he will likely go into the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next month in problematic form.
