St. Michael’s GC defend their Major Pennant Title

The 2013 season of the Srixon Men’sMajor Metropolitan Pennant competition has concluded with the five divisional finals all taking place over the weekend at various venues. It was St. Michael s Golf Club who claimed the Division 1 Major Pennant defeating Long Reef Golf Club at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Course. In what turned out to be great conditions for golf after some early heavy fog, it was St.Michael s who proved to be far too consistent, winning five of the 7 matches. Long Reef were gallant in defeat and win or lose they had already accomplished a great feat by reaching their first Division 1 Major Pennant Final in the club s history. St.Michael s on the other hand also achieved a slice of history by winning back to back titles, a feat not achieved by the club since 1956-57. Martin Wright, Managing Director of Srixon Australasia was kind enough to attend the Division 1 Pennant Final and present the winning pennant flag to St. Michael s Golf Club. The Division 2 Major Pennant Final at Concord Golf Club was won by Monash Golf Club over Antill Park Golf Club 5.5 matches to 1.5 matches. Monash proved far too strong on the day opening up a strong lead by obtaining 3.5 match wins in the opening four matches. Both clubs will be looking to achieve further success in 2014 when they move up to Division 1. At Long Reef Golf Club for the Division 3 Final it was Bayview Golf Club who won a tightly contested final against Windsor Golf Club. In a match up that at various stages looked like it could have gone either way it was crucial wins in two out of the final three matches that swayed the contest in Bayview s favour. The final result was Bayview with four match wins to Windsor s three. Division 4 saw Wallacia Panthers Golf Club defeat Richmond Golf Club 4.5 matches to 2.5 matches. Campbelltown Golf Club was the host of this contest and for many this result may be considered an upset after Richmond sailed through the round stages only dropping one contest whilst Wallacia Panthers had a tougher time of it progressing through after some inconsistency from week to week. On the day however it was Wallacia who proved to be more solid over the seven matches. In Division 5 Marrickville Golf Club upstaged Gordon Golf Club five matches to two. Marrickville proved to be worthy winners of the pennant after finishing the season without a loss. Although Gordon were unable to win the division the team will have gained great confidence out of their Major Pennant season and will be looking to have similar success when they are promoted to Division 4 with Marrickville next year.
