The 2016 Women’s & Men’s Port Phillip Open Amateur championships are set for a thrilling finish tomorrow at Commonwealth GC after today’s second round. Both the morning and afternoon fields enjoyed ideal scoring conditions, with the strong gusty winds and intermittent showers from round one a distant memory.
Joint round one leader Elizabeth Elmassian (The Australian NSW) fired the tournaments low round during round two, a blistering five under par 69 for a 36-hole total of seven under par 141. The NSW Women’s state team representative will take a six-shot advantage into tomorrow’s third round.
Elmassian’s nearest rival is defending Women’s Port Phillip champion Rebecca Kay (Coolangatta-Tweed QLD), who sits within striking distance with a 36-hole total of under par 147. Leading the Victorian charge is the trio of Alizza Hetherington (Royal Melbourne), Jess Pickwick (Kilmore) & Commonwealth’s Alex Hilliard who all sit at even par at the halfway stage.
In the Men’s Championship, it is a case of ‘mate versus mate’ atop a leaderboard dominated by Victorian state team players. Reigning Ivo Whitton Champion Kyle Michel (Shepparton) shares the lead with 2014 Port Phillip Men’s Champion Frazer Droop (Yarrawonga). Hot on the leading pairs heels is the duo of Zach Murray (Commonwealth) & David Micheluzzi (Metropoilitan) just one stroke adrift. Overnight leader Nathan Barbieri (Monash NSW) is also still well in the mix at even par just two strokes from the lead.
Play now moves to Commonwealth GC for rounds three & four, with the top 52 male players plus ties & top 22 female players plus ties based on 36-hole scores moving on to the final two rounds. The 2016 Women’s & Men’s Port Phillip Open Amateur championships are set for a thrilling finish tomorrow at Commonwealth GC after today’s second round.
