Englishman Steven Webster tamed the rigorous links of Carnoustie and powered to the head of the field after day one of the Alfred Dunhill Links championship, while Australian Scott Strange is just one stroke off the pace. Webster, though, carved out an impressive seven-under-par 65 over the testing Angus links to move into a one shot lead over Strange, Scotsman Paul Lawrie, Denmark&aposs Soren Hansen, and Hennie Otto of South Africa. New Zealander Michael Campbell, playing with celebrity partner Samuel L Jackson, had a reasonably steady round in recording two birdies and a solitary bogey, carding a one under 71 to finish the first day in a tie for 71st. Webster, the former Italian Open champion, set the tone for a productive day by holing a 20-foot putt for birdie on the first hole – and followed that up by making gains at both the second and third. The Englishman, who won the Open silver medal as the top amateur in the 1995 Open at St Andrews, picked up a further birdie at the sixth. He dropped a shot at 11, before reeling off four birdies in his closing seven holes to hoist himself to the front. For the Australian contingent, Strange carded a six-under 66 at Carnoustie through a solid round that consisted of nine birdies and three bogeys. Strange started well, posting a hat-trick of birdies from four to six before turning for home with a bogey on nine. In a hit and miss return to the clubhouse, Strange went on to card a further six birdies and two bogeys, although he managed to pick up a stroke on 18 to move into a tie for second. Two strokes behind Strange is Nathan Green who claimed six birdies and two bogeys in his four-under 68 round, while Peter O&aposMalley is a further stroke back at three-under. Matthew Millar is also on three-under after carding an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys in his 69 while Brett Rumford (70), Wade Orsmby, Steve Elkington, Kurt Barnes and New Zealander Campbell (all 71) are further back in the field.
