Strong six for senior Aussie team

Golf Australia has announced the Australian team to contest the 2016 Asia-Pacific Senior Amateur Championship to be played at Alabang Golf Club in Manila, Philippines from 16-18 November 2016.

The six-man team to contest the event is Stefan Albinski (NSW), Gordon Claney (Vic), Ian Frost (Vic), Peter Hannah (Qld), Greg Rhodes (Vic) and Steve Toyne (Qld).

Number one ranked Australian senior golfer and reigning Australian Senior Amateur Champion Rhodes will lead the charge after a stellar year on the Australian Senior Amateur Ranking circuit.

With wins in the Royal Melbourne Senior Classic, SA Senior Amateur, Grange and Kooyonga Senior Amateur, along with a number of second-place finishes, Rhodes will be a valuable asset to the team.

The ever-consistent Claney, second on the Australian men’s senior rankings, has also had a great year with wins in the Australian Men’s Senior Match Play and Gold Coast Senior, while fellow Victorian Frost, who sits fifth, won the National Senior Masters and finished in the top 10 of the Australian Senior Men’s Match Play and Gold Coast Senior Amateur.

Albinski makes his 8th appearance on the team and brings with him a wealth of experience, while Queenslanders Toyne and Hannah are fresh faces to the team.

Toyne is currently third on the Australian men’s senior rankings with wins in the NT Senior and top 10 finishes in the SA Senior Amateur, Queensland Senior Amateur and NSW Senior Amateur, while Hannah has finished in the top five of the ACT Senior, NSW Senior and NT Senior.

The Asia-Pacific Senior Amateur Championship is played over 54 holes stroke play and comprises an individual event with the team event held in conjunction.

In each round, the total of the four lowest scores constitutes the team score. The 54-hole total is the team’s score for the championship.

The event is organised by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation.
