Port Fairy Golf Club with its fabulous windswept, links design layout along the magnificent Southern Ocean was host to about 50 juniors today in two Stuart Appleby events, the Regional Series (18-holes) and Rookie Series (9-holes).
The weather gods were kind today bringing mild and very calm conditions however the par 72 layout still played havoc for many, as players struggled through the unrelenting layout along the sand dunes. 16 year old Kieran Vogels signed for a score of level par 72 in the Regional Series to take top overall honours in the boys section. The Huntingdale member narrowly edged out Royal Melbourne’s Harrison Gilbert on a countback for back to back victories in the Regional Series.
In the girls section, Nasya Sohail was the stand out today with a score of 75 to capture victory in what was the third Regional Series event for the year. Kai Shipp was next best in the girls section on a score of 78.
Vogels was also the best in A division with a nett score of 71 after prevailing on a countback from Portarlington’s Max Edmanson. Zac Wood set the course on fire today with a scintillating score of 65 from his 19 handicap to win B division. Travis Santoso also chimed into the winners circle by walking away with the C division title following 40 stableford points.
In the nine hole Rookie event Ben Powell came in with the lowest score for the field after carding a very impressive 36 to win the U11 boys section. Gracie Larsen added another win to her name after scoring a solid 43 in the U11 girls division. Bendigo’s Jordan Alston and Jazy Roberts took home the respective boys and girls U16 trophies with scores of 43 apiece.
Rookie Series specialist Sayumi De Costa notched up yet another victory today with a 9-hole nett score of 36 in the U16 girls. Tom Roberts joined the handicap winners on the podium with a round of 32 in the U16 boys while Jacob Ngo and Zara Shinn-Mahony captured the U11 boys and girls prizes.
All players were very appreciative of the BBQ that ran all day and supplied them with the energy needed to take on such a challenge. Many thanks must be passed on to the Port Fairy Golf Club for their continued support and also their array of volunteers.
The next Stuart Appleby events will take place during the June and July school holidays. Many of the events are almost fully subscribed so be quick not miss out.
