Sunshine and Sandgreens in Charlton

It was truly a perfect start to the Spring golfing season as players basked in the radiant sunshine and clear blue skies which presented beautiful playing conditions for the opening round of the 2012 Women’s Victorian Sandgreens Championship. Charlton Golf Club welcomed 143 players representing 47 different golf clubs across Victoria, as well as a few visitors from the sunshine state.

Mary-Anne Davis (Murray Downs) carded a solid round of 76 to be the gross leader for the tournament, followed closely by Briana Scarff (Belvoir Park) with gross 77. The nett component of the event was tightly contested, with many players bettering their handicap in these dry playing conditions. Leanne Key (Quarry Hill, Hcp 27) and Sue O’Connor (Clifton Springs, Hcp 34) are joint nett leaders with fantastic nett scores of 63 with Iris Dark (Grampians, Hcp 19) one shot behind on 64.

The lovely committee members and volunteers from Charlton Golf Club and a few neighbouring towns were out in full force today keeping the scrapes in top shape and providing a generous selection of home-cooked food for all the players. The Sandgreens Championship is always a very social event, and the players are looking forward to attending the Tournament Dinner hosted at the Charlton Golf Club tonight.
