Although the course was wet, the spirit of the competitors was not dampened at the inaugural Women’s Central Coast (Surf) / Hunter River (Turf) interdistrict match play tournament at Toukley Golf Course today.
Fifteen pairs took to the fairways and although the Central Coast ran away with the title, winning 10½ matches to 4½, the Hunter’s Captain, Melita Watson, was not too dispirited.
“It was an uphill battle because all our players had a handicap disadvantage, but I think everybody put in a good performance and enjoyed the camaraderie of the day,” she said.
Mrs Watson said getting the inaugural interdistrict match play off the ground took a mountain of work, but she added these match play competitions were critical to maintain women’s interest in the game of golf.
“I think it is particularly important for the lower markers because there are less and less of these style of events for them,” she said.
Central Coast Captain Yvonne Boardman agreed.
“Here on the coast our main pennants is now a fully handicap match play and that discourages the lower markers from competing,” she said.
“It is important that our districts work together to provide quality golf for all the standards.”
Although it may have been a Central Coast whitewash in 2018, Melita Watson promises the HRDGA will be back next year on home turf and is hopeful local advantage may get the Hunter over the line.
“We will give it a shake, don’t you worry about that,” she said.
“We had a few matches to go to the 18th today, so you never know.”
