Swing Fit – Its about being social and healthy

In the survey of GMA Members prior to the 2015 GMA Conference, membership came up in the top four issues with women’s membership a high issue of importance.

Currently, women make up 21% of club memberships.  With a focus on women in golf, in July 2013 Golf Australia partnered with the Australian Sports Commission, to conduct research into women’s participation.  Research found out that 1.3 million Australian Women would consider participating in golf in the next 12 months; and 512,000 were motivated to participate.

Of women motivated to participate in golf in the next 12 months, 55% were aged 16-39.

So, how do we get more women into golf?  The key is to understand the motivations of women’s participation.   The report states, “There is a perception within the golf community that women may be motivated to participate in golf to compete or for a challenge”.  This is, however, not borne out by the research.

The key drivers to attract women are instead social benefits and health benefits.

Women want a chance to meet likeminded people and participate in a game that can be played with family and friends.  It has to be beneficial to their fitness and be held at well managed facilities with a welcoming atmosphere.  Learning the skills of golf is important for women so they won’t be embarrassed.  Cost can be a turn off.  They are prepared to spend around $20 per visit.

Based on the research, Swing Fit has since been developed as the national female introductory program for golf.  It is an innovative golf health, fitness and skill development program, which has socialisation, conditioning and games based learning at its core.

A Swing Fit Program has a prescribed format based on a 6 week program with 75 minute lessons in group sizes of 6-10.   All sessions involve social interaction and feedback.

Beginner sessions use a games based skill approach to maximise fun and early success.

Training for PGA members will commence in September 2015 (ACE Series) with the aim to have programs up and running in time for October which nationally is GOLF MONTH.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest to deliver the program from all golf facilities, members of the PGA & ALPG and Community Instructors.
