Tanihara triumphs in Japan

Hideto Tanihara won his seventh Japan Tour title with an 18-under-par total in the Munsingwear Open KSB Cup on Sunday. Tanihara carded a one-over 73 but his six-shot overnight cushion was too much for the rest of the field to overcome despite a mesmerising bogey-free eight-under 64 from Katsunori Kuwabara at Tojigaoka Marine Hills Golf Club. Kuwabara finished joint second on 15-under-par alongside Shingo Katayama and Nobuhito Sato, who signed for 69 and 70 respectively. Tanihara carded 65, 67 and 65 in the opening three rounds but he struggled on the final day, going through nine holes on level par after a bogey on the fourth was cancelled out by a birdie on the eighth. A further bogey on the 12th followed, but the 29-year-old managed to hold on. Kuwabara had birdies on the second, third, fourth, and sixth, an eagle on the par-four 14th and further birdies on the 16th and 17th in his blemish-free round. Katayama was also bogey-free in his 69, while Sato carded four birdies before two bogeys on the back nine. Five players, including Australian Steve Conran, were tied for fifth on 13-under. Craig Parry was a stroke further back after a closing 69, while Paul Sheehan finished at eight-under.
