Tea Tree Gully has claimed an unprecedented 12th consecutive Senior Pennant title defeating The Grange 4.5 – 2.5 in the season decider at Glenelg.
In a rematch of last year’s final, Tea Tree Gully were off to a flying start with number seven Phillip Smith and number six Ian Alexander both winning 1up.
It looked like TTG would cruise to a big victory, however The Grange pegged their way back courtesy of Peter Sossic 1up and Eric Lane 4&2, to level the contest 2-2.
The Grange pushed the champions all the way in 2017 going down narrowly 4-3 in the decider and another close contest was brewing.
Match three between Chris Everett and Shane Amor was halved.
However, when push came to shove, Tea Tree Gully once again proved too strong with top end players, Australian rep John Davey defeated Andrew Grant 8&6 and Norm Cordina at number two defeated Kym Meyer 4&3 to secure the title for Tea Tree Gully yet again.
Tea Tree Gully’s John Davey was complimentary of the opposing finalist.
“They’re getting closer and closer to us as we are getting older, it was really tight today.” Davey said
“We’ve pretty much had the same team, we’ve had a few new players who recently turned 55 fill in this season when some of us were unavailable and they acquitted themselves very well when called on.
“Ian Alexander won 9 from 9 and Phil Smith 8.5 from 9 matches so they were pretty handy at six or seven getting you off to that kind of start each week”.
“Our club supports us very well, in the same way they support all pennant sides, they’ve been great. I have been a member for 40 odd years and they have always supported the teams”.
Tea Tree Gully have now won all 12 years premierships since the Senior Pennants started in 2007.
