The Australian Open is under way

Some familiar names have surged to the top of the Australian Open leaderboard early in Round 1.

After wind gusted when play began around 7am, the birdies have started to flow as the breeze subsides and Brett Rumford, Richard Green and Aron Price have cashed in.

The trio shares the lead at -2, but a host of big names are right on their heels with Geoff Ogilvy, Matt Jones, Matt Goggin and dual champion Greg Chalmers among a bunch at one under.

World No.1 Rory McIlroy looked set to pounce when he made birdie on the par-5 14th (his fifth hole), but a bogey on the next pushed him back to square with the card and tied for 16th.

Early leader Ryan Lynch made back-to-back bogeys on 16and 17 after two drives into fairway traps, but he’s still in the mix at square.

At the other end of the field, a familiar name is having a day that is anything but.

Popular veteran Andre Stolz is six over through eight holes, including an uncharacteristic double-bogey seven on the par-five 5th.

The opening four-hole stretch is a real test, playing a combined 1.3 shots over par to have the majority of the field in black numbers early.
