The first of two Doris Chambers State Finals was played today at the Gardiners Run Golf Course in Lilydale, with over 125 women participants involved.

With October being Golf Month, it was fitting that club qualifiers congregated to the Metropolitan area to compete in the State Final. Each Golf Victoria affiliated club wishing to take part in the Foursomes Stableford competition plays a club qualifying round on its own course with the winners advancing to one of two finals, dependent on the clubs’ location.

Today’s final was strongly contested with The Dunes pair of Sandy Rigutto & Denise Hudd topping the leaderboard at the end of the day. The pair carded a score of 39 foursomes stableford points in what was ideal spring weather. Three pointers on eight holes helped the pair edge their name of the prestigious Doris Chambers Cup. The pair edged out Mary Morgan & Debra Vuillermins (Morwell) on a countback in this afternoons field.

Winners of the AM field were Woodlands pair Sandra Girvan & young gun Mel Foster who scored 38 foursomes stableford points.

With numerous Victorian courses experiencing unseasonal wet weather, the players were relieved to get some quality golf in. Another 150 participants will now contest the second State Final which is to be played at Sanctuary Lakes Club next Thursday 20 October. Everyone will be trying to get their names engraved alongside Rigutto & Hudd.
