Thomas cashes in on local knowledge

There’s no knowledge like local knowledge – just ask Peter Thomas.

Thomas took advantage of pristine early conditions at his home club, Manly, today to share the lead as the Australian Men's Senior Amateur Championship began in Sydney.

It took until late on a perfect afternoon for Victoria’s Greg Rhodes and Queenslander Peter Hannah each fired two-under-par 69s to match Thomas, who’d earlier made a bogey on the 18th hole to keep some of his rivals in touch.

Gold Coaster Philip Towle and Avondale’s Richard Greville almost kept pace with opening 70s to share fourth place.

On a day of solid scoring, defending champion Gordon Claney, of Melbourne, opened with a 74 to be tied 11th and remain in the hunt.

Less favourable weather is forecast to develop late on Wednesday morning, which could potentially give tomorrow’s early starters the edge.

Thursday’s final round will be a seeded draw based on the 36-hole leaderboard after tomorrow’s action.
