Tiger Woods blew his chance to win his first PGA Tour tournament since 2013 in North Carolina today as six Australians progressed to the tour finals.
Woods, the former world No. 1, was in his best position for several years, playing in the second-last group of the Wyndham Championship. He had only entered the tournament on the chance that with a win, he could sweep into the finals of the Fedex Cup, which start next week.
But Woods made a triple bogey with two duffed chips at the 11th hole and could not recover. He carded a final-round 70 to finish in a tie for 10th behind veteran Davis Love, who won the tournament for the third time.
Woods' season is now over, winless for the fourth time in his career.
Queenslander Cameron Smith finished strongly to be the leading Australian in a tie for 18th, but Victoria's Cameron Percy, who was in the top five through three rounds, faded to finish tied-38th.
World No. 3 Jason Day is the top Australian qualifier for the four-tournament tour finals which begin with the Barclays tournament next week, ranked No. 2 behind Jordan Spieth. Steven Bowditch (22), Marc Leishman (50), Matt Jones (55), John Senden (88) and Adam Scott (94) also made it into the top 125 on the Fedex Cup points list, giving themselves a chance of the lucrative prizemoney on offer over the next month.
Meanwhile in Europe, Terry Pilkadaris finished tied-second in the Made In Denmark tournament, his best result of the year.
