Tight at the top at Moonah Links

The first round of the 2018 Victorian Boys and Girls Championship kicked off this morning at the coastal Moonah Links Golf Club with a full field of 122 boys and 34 girls taking to the course. A calm morning treated players before the wind picked up and the temperature lowered – making good scoring tough for the afternoon field.

Last years boys champion, Kazuma Kobori (Pegasus, NZ) shares a three-way lead in the boys section with Hayden Hopewell (Royal Fremantle, WA) and Thomas Heaton (The Australian, NSW). The trio signed for a 2-under par 70. Trailing the overnight front runners by a mere shot following rounds of 71 apiece, sees Victorian’s Matthew Lever (The National), Blair Christie (Victoria) and Daniel Gill (Commonwealth).

Meanwhile in the girls section, June Song from Avondale (NSW) has hit the ground running in with a fine round of two-under 70 in the still conditions this morning. Song managed to come home with an inward nine of three-under which included a birdies at the 13th, 16th and 18th holes.

However, both Yerin Kim (Strathfield, NSW) and NSW Girls Development Squad member Annika Boyd (Pymble) sit just one stroke in arrears of Song and will be keen to make up the deficit come tomorrow morning.

With a carbon copy of today’s weather anticipated tomorrow, a similar scoring pattern could follow for tournament leaders.
