Round 1 of the Women’s Country Championship and Glenelg Cup was played in brilliant sunshine today across both Murray and Lake Courses at Yarrawonga-Mulwala Golf Club Resort. Players were treated to a sunny top of 17 degrees and a mild breeze this afternoon which was a welcomed break from the chill of winter golf.

Clubhouse leader after the first qualifying round for the Country Championship is one half of yesterday’s winning foursomes combination, Helen Pascoe (Buninyong). Playing off a handicap of 1 and starting on the first hole of the Lake course, Helen bogeyed the last 3 holes on the front 9 to go out in 3 over par, a 6-over par back nine brought her daily score to an 81 off the stick.

The leaderboard is tight at the top, with Pascoe a mere shot ahead of Wodonga’s Judy Langford, and a further shot of tied third positions Donna Rohrich (Commercial Albury) and Victorian State Team member Steff Vogel (Cobram Barooga), both sitting on 83. Best nett scores in the Country Championship for round 1 sees local Carol McDonald ahead by 4 shots after she posted a 71 off a handicap of 18, Rohrich is in the runner-up seat with 75.

Over in the Glenelg Cup, Pam Burton of Woodend is in the standalone lead on the Murray Course. The 32 marker had a fantastic back nine of 53 off the stick (nett 37) for a total of nett 73 to be leading by a single shot from Sharyn Wilson (Yarrawonga-Mulwala) who is the first of a string of 3 local members at the top of the table. The best gross score came from Wendy Dixon (Yarrawonga Mulwala) with a 95 off the stick followed closely by Angela Broadbent (Belvoir Park) who is one behind on 96.

The Tournament Dinner is hosted at the club tonight before Round 2 begins again tomorrow morning from 8:42am (Glenelg Cup) and 9:30am (Country Championships).
