Tight at the top in Men’s Amateur Stroke Play

By Alistair Hogg at NSWGC Josh Younger and Andrew Dodt are among a group of seven players tied for the lead after the opening round of the 2007 Amateur Stroke Play Championship in Sydney. The pair carded rounds of four under to join Brenton Haines, Kevin Lee, Jordan Sherratt, David Horsey and Matthew Jager on top of the leader board at New South Wales Golf Club, La Perouse. Players were greeted by blue skies and a light breeze on the morning of day one however low scoring became increasingly difficult in the afternoon as the wind picked up, playing havoc with many competitors. Younger&aposs scintillating round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-five 13th which took him to three-under having played just four holes after starting at the 10th. The Victorian then bogeyed the first before a consistent run of pars was topped off by back-to-back birdies on seven and eight to leave him in a share of the lead. Joining Younger at the top is his National Squad team mate, Dodt who enjoyed run of four birdies in five holes on the back nine to leave him well placed going into the second round. The Queenslander was Australia&aposs low amateur at the 2006 MFS Australian Open and will be determined to make his presence felt this weekend. The competition is tight however as 10 players are within a stroke of the lead. England&aposs best fared reasonably well on one of Australia&aposs most testing courses. World Number one amateur Jamie Moul carded a reliable two-under while strong-finishing David Horsey found himself in a tie for the lead at four under to be the best placed international. His team mate Ben Parker, Kiwi Troy Ropiha and Ratankul Nakarintra of Thailand all shot three-unders. The top ranked 32 players at the conclusion of the stroke play on Sunday evening will qualify for Monday&aposs historic Australian Amateur Championship match play.
