‘I’m very humble to have won’ were Barry’s first words in his presentation speech after claiming the prestigious 2014 National Senior Masters.
Barry, who is a member at 13th Beach, becomes one of five to have won the ‘green jacket’ after finishing with a 75 on the Par 72 Ocean Course.
Barry started a little shaky with a bogey on the Par 5 1st followed by a double on the 3rd, but then steadied with an impressive even par back 9 to fire yet another round of 75. Three rounds of 75 gave him a total of 225 to win by two shots from Ian McPherson & Gordon Claney. Tippett continues his impressive form with some recent success including his win at the Lonsdale Senior Amateur.
In the nett championship, John Hoare led from start to finish claiming the title. Hoare had three nett rounds of 63, 77 & 74 to win by win by only one from Alan Buckley & Trevor Hillier. John’s 63 around the Moonah course on day one were nothing short of spectacular.
Without a doubt, The National golf courses and less than perfect golf weather were a true challenge for the 192 players who competed this week in the prestigious Golf Australia ranked National Senior Masters Championship. The venue and event format, however, continue to not only attract Victorian golfers but also interstate and international players every year.
In terms of the venue, The National Golf Club could be Australia’s golf ‘mecca’ with all three courses Moonah, Ocean and Old rated #8, #10 & #30 respectively in Australia. The 54 stroke format makes it interesting for players who need to survive a cut after 36 holes to continue on into the main field. Finally, the competition was fierce with 11 of the top 25 Golf Australia’s ranked seniors competing for the title. This Championship was really a battle for the toughest!
The players also enjoyed the hospitality the golf club has to offer with a tournament dinner, buffet style, so outstanding is rare to see.
In 2015 the event will take place from Tuesday 14 to Thursday 16 April with many players already looking forward to coming back to the event.
