Gardiners Run Golf Course was home to the 2018 School Sport Victoria Junior State Final today as students looked to finish the closing event with an A+. The state final field was a cluster of students from all corners of the state, with many returning students and a few fresh faces, all keen to finish on top of the class.
With the state final set as the pinnacle school event for the year it continues to present that concoction of both excitement and nerves for all the players. As the golf began the nerves settled and the scores took centre stage.
In the girls championship it was close at the top. Last years runner-up Alessandra Nagayo (Rowville SC) made it one better in 2018, taking home the title with a round of three over 75. Also improving on her result from last year was Jazy Roberts (Crusoe College) finishing in solo second with a round of four over 76. Rounding out the top three positions was Kayli Schenk (Maribyrnong College) with a six over 78.
In the boys championship the spread of scores was impressive, plenty of players shooting close to par, with the top three needing to go under to take home the title positions. Out in front was young gun Thomas Hanson (Trinity College) recording a four under round of 68. In a close second was Baxter Droop (Sacred Heart College) with a round of two under 70, and in third on a count-back was Michael Song (Rowville SC) with one under 71.
In the overall handicap event it was Eric Smith (Brauer College) and Louise Rose Baliton (Maribyrnong College) who finished out in front.
