With a full field congregating in gloomy thundery conditions at the Barwon Heads Clubhouse there was a certain amount of concern as to whether play would get started. The weather smiled upon the field at 12.45pm just in time for the start. Blue skies appeared from the North West whilst lightning was visible in the east heading towards Melbourne.
The field enjoyed bright sunny conditions for two hours before heavy grey clouds started to accumulate from the North West. The radar and lightning tracker were not encouraging so reluctantly for the safety of all players the Siren had to be sounded at 5.06pm with most groups just two to three holes from completion. A 45-minute break was needed to allow the danger to pass.
With several groups opting not to return to the course rest of the field was soon battling the course again.
The mixed section was tight with Kathryn Robertson and father Bazil Hammond producing 43 points to pip mother & son pair Saowapa & Struan McDowell on 42 points.
The Women’s section was just as close with Caroline & Ruth Dickens posting 43 points to triumph over Sophie Byrne & Sarah Vandertop with 42 points.
The men’s section recorded the highest scores of the day with a three-way count back on 44 for runners-up with Simon & Matt Sheedy emerging ahead and winners Greg & John Brown recording the best score of the day on 45 points.
The Championship, which is open to amateurs and professionals who have an immediate family relationship (step-parents, adopted parents and de-facto inclusive), was introduced in 2004. With the support of Barwon Heads Golf Club, the event (State Final prior to 2011) has been played here since it’s inauguration.
