In 2017 Golf Victoria will be offering the Stuart Appleby tournaments listed in the table below. All of these tournaments are open to players Under 21 years at the time of the first day of play and are generally multi round events. They are played in age divisions (U14, 16, 18 and 21) entries permitting.
Players must be at least 10 years old to enter (in exceptional circumstances GV may choose to vary this condition).

2017 Southern Junior Classic
In contrast to yesterday idyllic conditions, a drizzly morning greeting the players this morning at Southern Golf Club for the final round of the junior classic. The early rain cleared after about one hole but as the round progressed so did the wind making conditions a little tricky.
After the round of his life yesterday Harry Goakes continued the sizzling form today to home the overall boys title. After breaking par for the first time yesterday, Goakes did it yet again today for a fantastic three under-par 69. The Royal Melbourne member starting hot with a birdie at the first hole before following it up with eight consecutive pars. Coming home he held his neve, with three birdies and just the one bogey to sign for his round of 69 to tally nine under-par for the two rounds.
Peter Vassiliadis finished in second place with solid rounds of 71 and 72 to be closely followed by Jack Rasmussen with 71 yesterday and 73 today.
Starting the day with a four-shot buffer, overnight Kay Bannan returned a solid round of three over-par 77 to capture victory by the narrowest of margins on her home course. The Southern member was impressive and maintained her composure throughout the day as she watched her playing partner Ahila-Ann Krishnamurthi edge closer and closer. In the end the Bannan’s lead would prove too much as Krishnamurthi fell just one shot short despite her best efforts following her two-under par 72 today.
Young Fijian Ka Eun Lee was too strong in the overall handicap section beating her handicap by a massive 13 shots over the past two days!
Congratulations to all the divisional winners and thanks must also be extended to Southern Golf Club for the outstating hospitality and course condition.

2017 Yarrawonga Junior Open
The final round of the Stuart Appleby Yarrawonga Junior Open was played on the Lake course at the Yarrawonga-Mulwala Golf Club Resort. Overnight leader Piper Stubbs was poised to claim the title taking a 4 stroke lead into this morning’s round. In the boys section there where 7 players within reach of winning.
Antony Majstorovic and Toby Walker were going head to head early with Majstorovic extending his lead to 2 after a birdie on the second hole. Walker quickly responded with a birdie on the third to bring the gap back to one shot. Both birdied the fourth and fifth holes before Walker made bogey on the sixth and gave Majstorovic a two shot lead. Majstorovic then made double bogey on the eighth bringing him level with Walker. Walker then grabbed the lead after a birdie on the par five ninth hole while Majstorovic made par.
Meanwhile Nathan Page had a bogey free front nine with four birdies to be out in 32 and Daniel Gill who started the round just one shot back was out in 35, both now just one shot back from Majstorovic.
Walker then backed up on the tenth with another birdie to take a two shot lead. Both Majstorovic and Walker then steadied with pars on the eleventh and twelfth holes before disaster struck Majstorovic, another double bogey on the thirteenth handed Walker a four shot lead and let Daniel Gill back in. Meanwhile Nathan Page’s bogey at the thirteenth pushed him up to tied third place with Majstorovic.
Walker maintained a three shot lead over Gill after they both made birdie at the fifteenth.
Gill and Page both bogey on the sixteenth putting Gill into second place and four shots back and Page in fourth place six shots back.
Page then rebounds on the seventeenth with a strong birdie putting him into a tie for third with Majstorovic.
Majstorovic and Page both finished with birdies as did Walker while Gill made par. Walker finished his awesome round of 66 to win by five shots at a seven under par total a tournament record. Gill, Majstorovic and Page all finished tied second on a total of two under par.
In the Girls section Piper Stubbs was out in 36 and Steffi Vogel was out in 39 giving Stubbs a six shot lead going down the tenth hole. Stubbs came in with even par 36 and Vogel who managed to make five birdies in what was an up and down round came in with 37. Stubbs extended her four shot lead to win by two in an impressive display from the young gun.
Paddy Murphy from Buninyong ran away with the overall handicap title as he signed for rounds of 71 and 62 making a nine shot improvement from his first round.

2017 Leongatha Junior Open
Toby Walker has captured his second Stuart Appleby title for the year after holding on to win todays Leongatha Junior Open.
Conditions were the opposite from yesterday’s cold and windy day as players basked in a magnificent sunshine with only the slightest breeze to mention. The temperature was steady as it reached into the high teens – drying out the course from the deluge that fell night before and the days leading up to the weekend.
James Walker from Wodonga applied the pressure to Toby Walker early on the inward nine with his lead narrowing to only a few shots. However, the deficit James faced over the Heidelberg member was too much with Toby prevailing by three strokes after signing for a round six over-par 76. Toby Walker’s first win came at the Yarrawonga Junior Open when he fired two sub-par rounds, including a scintillating final round 66 to take home the honours.
Heading into today’s final round with a one-shot lead, Commonwealth’s Cody Cuthbert carded 76 from his 7 handicap for victory in the overall nett section. Cuthbert notched out James Walker by two shots for the title.
Chelsea Dunne from Latrobe took home the overall girls title.

The 2015 Yarrawonga Mulwala Junior Open finished in style this morning as players took to the well-manicured Murray course. The Murray course meanders through the towering river gums and favours those that control the ball well from tee to green. Calm conditions again greeted players this morning with the sun making an appearance on more than one occasion throughout the day.
With many of the field struggling today, Mikihisa Matsumoto fired a brilliant two under-par 70 to complement his opening round of two over-par for a 36-hole tally of 144 and the clubhouse lead with only two groups remaining. Trailing by a single shot with only one hole to play, overnight leader Antony Majstorovic wasn’t going to let his maiden title slip though his fingers. Majstorovic held his neve coming down the 18th hole to finish with a birdie and tied for the lead with Matsumoto.
Both players, along with a 50 other onlookers gathered on the first hole of the Murray course for a sudden death playoff. Majstorovic was the first to play and nailed his drive right down the middle while Matsumoto flared his drive into the right trees. Looking stymied behind the trees, the Woodlands member struck a brilliant 8 iron over the canopies to 15 feet for an uphill birdie attempt.
Majstorovic’s 80m approach from the fairway was too strong and was left with a 30 foot putt from a few metres off the green, downhill and right to left breaking. What happened next was nothing short of extraordinary, he tapped his putt only just hard enough to make the putting surface and then the slope took the ball on a long journey directly into the cup for what was the most unlikely birdie. Matsumoto had his putt to tie but it missed on the low side leaving Antony Majstorovic as the holder of the 2015 title.
Heading into the final round tied with Melanie Foster, Kono Matsumoto broke away with the lead at the turn with a two shot buffer over the 18 year old. Kono proceeded to birdie the par 5 11th hole and then followed it up with seven straight pars to close with a level par 72 and capture victory by six strokes with a total of 146 or two over par.
It was a tight affair in the overall nett section with three players tied on a tournament total of 138, six under their respective handicaps. Making the most of the calm conditions, it was Cobram Barooga’s Jordan Bovalina who took home the honours after returning rounds of 70 and 68 from his 13 handicap.
Still on a high after scoring his first hole in one, Heritage’s Joshua Lee returned the best nett round for the tournament with a stellar 63 this morning – nine under his handicap!

2016 Peninsula Junior Open
The 2016 Stuart Appleby Peninsula Junior Open moved to Sorrento Golf club this morning for the second and final round. Unexpectedly, the storms crippling much of South Australia that were due to hit the Peninsula this morning were nowhere to be seen. Instead, a mild and overcast day slowly developed into a sunny afternoon – ideal for low scoring.
Taking a substantial five shot buffer into today after a scintillating 68 yesterday, Jack Deftereos-Brennan held his nerve to prevail as the boys Champion with a round of three over-par 73 for a tournament tally of level par. The Woodlands member finished a very comfortable seven shots ahead of Settlers Run’s Harrison Whykes who fired a stellar round of one under par this morning.
After also sleeping with the lead overnight, Alice Fan was seemingly unphased by the tricky Sorrento layout as she managed her way to a round of one over-par 72 to capture victory. Her first round of one under 71 at Portsea yesterday afternoon set the foundation for her success with a 36-hole tally of 143 or level par. Both Zara Woodbridge and Shanaiah Fernando had solid rounds of 72 today to be positioned in joint second place.
Meanwhile Lachlan Robinson kept the momentum going from yesterday’s nett score of 66 to back it up again today with yet another amazing round of 66 for the overall handicap title. Jennifer Quinlan was nipping at his heels all day to fall only one stroke short but she walked away with the handicap honours in the U16 girls section.

2016 Signature Tournament
Gardiners Run at Chirnside Park were hosts of the Stuart Appleby Signature Tournament for the second consecutive year. Players contended with a warmer than average day with the mercury reaching into the low 30’s. Although quite hot, conditions were relatively calm in the heart of the Yarra Valley, providing ideal conditions for low scoring. The event has a strong history of great champions, with the likes of USLPGA professional Su-Hyun Oh and 2016 Isuzu Queensland Open champion Brett Coletta as former winners.
Hill Top’s Joseph Thomas proved too strong in the boys section after firing a brilliant round of level par 72 to take home the silverware. However, the victory wasn’t a walk in the park when a playoff was required to separate the tie between he and local Gardiners Run member Jake Fullerton. Heading down the 18th hole on the first playoff hole, Thomas hit the challenging 380 metre par 4 in regulation and then effortlessly rolled in his birdie putt for the title.
Kono Matsumoto played her way around the par 71 layout for a fantastic round of 71 today to take out the girls Signature Tournament title. The 17 year old had a relatively consistent day with nines of 37 and 34 for her one under par tally. Ashni Solanki was close behind and finished runner up after signing for a score of 73.
There we some fantastic scores in the overall nett section, but in the end Alessandra Nagayo took top honours. The 13-marker hailing from Waverley Golf Club effortlessly broke her handicap by a massive 9 shots for a round of 63 and the victory.
A big thanks must be extended to Gardiners Run’s and their staff for the excellent condition of the course and their hospitality.

2016 Murray River Junior Masters
The fourth and final round to this year’s Murray River Junior Masters reconvened this morning at Cobram-Barooga Golf Club. All eyes were on the overnight leaders as the tournament looked to crown the 2016 champions.
Like yesterday the conditions were testing, with the swirling wind capturing more than one prisoner as the day unfolded. Starting the round with a significant seven shot buffer Ooi held her nerve to take home the girls title. However it wasn’t a walk in the park for the Kew member, early birdies on the opening two holes from Ashleigh Hall applied the pressure to Ooi. The deficit was reduced to four shots with only a handful of holes left but late bogeys from Hall put a dampener on any charge she might attempt. In the end Ashleigh Hall and Steffi Vogel finished eight shots behind Ooi.
Ooi played remarkably consistent all week, especially given her lack of preparation to the event with an ankle injury. The scratch marker fired rounds of 73, 73, 71 and 74 to be the only player below par for the tournament at one under.
Taking a one-shot advantage over Liam Gransden heading into today’s final round, a solid day from Andre Lautee would be necessity to improve on his runner-up finish in the boys section last year. Lautee, a member of Kingston Heath, signed for a round of three over par 75 today to close the tournament at three over-par for top honours. The 17-year-old set the foundation for his victory in the first three rounds with rounds of 73, 70 and 73. Gransden will be left with a feeling of what could have been this morning after he discovered too many clubs in his bag leading to a four-shot penalty.
No doubt both Lautee and Ooi will be hoping to continue their form into the Victorian Junior Masters which tees off early January.
Matthew Dunne ran away with the overall handicap title as he effortlessly signed for rounds of 66, 70, 67 and 68 to beat his 8 handicap by a barnstorming 17 strokes.
