UK: Ladies’ British Amateur and Brabazon Trophy

LADIES&apos BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, Ganton Golf Club AIS squad members Stacey Keating (VIC), Justine Lee (NSW) and Ashley Ona (QLD) will join National Squad team mate Jessica Speechley (WA), as well as Stacey Shanahan as the Australian contenders at this year&aposs Ladies&apos British Amateur Championship at Ganton Golf Club. The championship comes after a series of excellent results in the UK for the travelling group. Keating finished third at the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews and Lee then clinched runner-up honours at the Irish Ladies Stroke Play Championship as Ona, Keating and Speechley all finished in the Top 6. Speechley and Lee finished tied in the Astor Salver at Berkshire Golf Club the following week. Among the leading international challengers are Carlota Ciganda, a former champion from the Spanish city of Pamplona and Sweden&aposs Caroline Hedwall. Both Hedwall and Ciganda represented their countries at the 2008 World Amateur Team Championships in Adelaide. Spanish players have dominated the Ladies British Open Amateur Championships over the past decade with Marta Prieto (2001), Elisa Serramia (2003), Belen Mozo (2006), Carlota Ciganda (2007) and Azahara Munoz (2009) all winning the prestigious title. Ganton Golf Club’s course, situated some 11 miles from Scarborough, will undoubtedly play its part in ensuring that the new champion is a player of the highest quality. The Yorkshire course, with its linksy feel, has staged the 1949 Ryder Cup, the 2000 Curtis Cup and the 2003 Walker Cup and was once referred to by Gary Player as the only inland course worthy of staging the Open championship . BRABAZON TROPHY, Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake The 2010 English Men’sOpen Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the Brabazon Trophy supported by Skycaddie is being staged at Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake. Current Srixon Australian Amateur and Stroke Play champion Matt Jager is the only Australian in a field. This historic course has staged the Brabazon on four occasions. In 1961, the late Ronnie Shade was champion, followed in 1972 by Peter Moody a former Cambridge captain. Sandy Lyle lifted the trophy in 1977, while the 1989 event saw a tie between Craig Rivett from South africa and Neil Roderick from Wales. The 2010 Championship is open to Male Amateur Golfers of all Nationalities. The format is 72 hole stroke play over 4 days. After 36 holes, the leading 60 competitors and ties play a further 18 holes on the third day and a final 18 holes on the fourth day.
