US Amateur: Goss top Aussie qualifier

Click here for Full Leaderboard Perth National Squad member Oliver Goss is the top Australian qualifier after Stroke Play qualifying at the US Amateur Championship in Colorado. Goss finished qualifying in a tie for 9th place following a second round 4-under par 66. His 72-66 had him at 3-under par. Golf Australia High Performance Director Brad James said the boys were relaxed and results showed. “It was nice and relaxed out there and they put up the numbers which is good to see,” James said. “They really egg one another on – there&aposs lots of banter and they all want to know how the others are going – it&aposs good to see a tight-knit group.” “It was nowhere near as windy as yesterday and the course dried out. Not a lot was sticking on the greens.” James said Queenslander Cameron Smith, who will face a play-off for the final spots after finishing in a group of 17 players at 2-over par, had bounced back well. “A pleasing 66 after his opening round 77 and he birdied five of his last seven holes including a 20 footer for birdie on the 8th (his 17th).” Brett Drewitt (NSW) finished with rounds of 69-71 to qualify in 19th place while fellow New South Welshman Matt Stieger finished in a tie for 25th at even par. Victorian National Squad member Todd Sinnott had rounds of 73-69 to be at 1-over par in a tie for 39th. Daniel Nisbet, Rory Bourke and Jake Higginbottom failed to qualify. The first round of Match Play and the play-off for the final places will be played tonight (AEST).
