Vale – Jim Speirs, Former NSWGA Board Member

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Speirs. Jim was a former NSW Golf Association Board Member during the 90&aposs. He served on the Council and on a number of committees. Jim was an accredited rules official and officiated at a number of events, including the Opens. He is widely known for his dedication to golf and will be sorely missed. Jim Speirs first joined Wagga Wagga Country Golf Club in 1971and remained a full member until 2012. Both in a playing capacity and in golf administration Jim was a high achiever and he represented Wagga Wagga Country Club and Riverina DGA with distinction. As a player Jim won a number ofWWCC Club Championships (including 4 years in a row 1975-1978) and Honour Board Events. In a remarkable achievement he had his name listed on at least one of the WWCC honour boards for 18 years in a row and his name is on the Honour Boards more than any other player. At a Regional level Jim was Riverina Golf Champion in 1975 and 1978 and also won 4BBB, foursomes and sand greens Riverina events. He won the City of Wagga Wagga Championships in 1984. Jim had been a captain and player in many winning Scratch RDGA Pennants teams and has also Captained Riverina Representative teams in NSW Golf Association country competitions. As an administrator Jim had served as a director ofWWCC over many years and during this time he was both Club Captain and Chairman of Greens. He was a member of the Riverina DGA Executive for many years and had terms as both President and Captain. He also served for many years as the Riverina Delegate to the NSW Golf Association and then as a Director of the NSWGA he served on Match and Rules Committees. Jim also became a qualified Tournament Rules Official and served in this capacity at both NSW and Australian Open Tournaments. In all these prestigious positions Jim became a very positive ambassador for Wagga Wagga Country Club. Jim&aposs contributions to golf led to him receiving many accolades throughout local, regional and NSW golfing communities. He was a loyal and popular member of WWCC and his advice on rules was constantly sought by Match Committee and fellow golfers. His contribution to the club in terms of &aposbar time&apos was second to none. Jim was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Wagga Wagga Country Club in 2012 prior to his passing on 17th January 2013. Golf NSW extends its deepest sympathies and prayers to Jim&aposs family and friends.
