It is with deep sadness we announce Golf NSW Life Member Lionel Clark passed away. Mr Clark was heavily involved in the NSW Golf Association and the Australian Golf Union serving in numerous roles. He served on the NSW Golf Association for six years as its President from 1984 to 1989, Vice President from 1981-1983, and on numerous committees: Regional Advisory, Finance & Industrial Relations, Membership, Zone, Executive, Match, Boundary, Handicapping & Course Rating, Rules, Golf Publications, and History of Golf Book.
Mr Clark was an exemplary leader. It was reflected in the numerous leadership roles he served in: Australian Golf Union President in 1988, Newcastle District Golf Association President from 1975 to 1987, and Muree Golf Club President from 1965 to 1984.
NSW Golf Association awarded Life Membership to Mr Clark in 1990, which was carried over to Golf NSW when the organisation was reformed.
He continued to be vocal well into his mid-90s as an advocate for golf. At 95 years old, he was interviewed for an article in the Port Stephens Examiner (July 19, 2016) about the benefits of golf on long life, “Muree golf Club life member backs University of Queensland research findings on long life.”
His golfing legacy is reflected by the three generations of family members who are following in his footsteps. His son-in-law John Waanders served as a Board Member of NSW Golf Association and Golf NSW. His son Leigh plays golf in A Grade (Hcp 12) and served on Muree's Board in numerous roles from 1973 to 2018. His grandson Craig plays A-Grade at Muree and on a leadership track on its Board. His great grandson Brandon has taken up golf at the same club.
A gentleman, a leader, a friend, and a great family man, Mr Lionel Clark will be sorely missed.
