Margery McWilliam, a Life Member of Golf NSW, passed away on Saturday, 21st January.
Mrs McWilliam was a passionate advocate for women’s golf and was renowned for being one of the nation’s greatest educators on the Rules of Golf having refereed State, Australian and Commonwealth matches.
Her extraordinary service to women’s golf in New South Wales as a referee and administrator saw her recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2008.
She was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for her service to Women’s Golf NSW (WGNSW), which she had been involved with since 1963.
In 2003, Women’s Golf NSW honoured Margery with Life Membership where the attendees gave her an overwhelming ovation. When Women’s Golf NSW and the NSW Golf Association merged, Golf NSW paid tribute to her involvement in the sport by carrying forward her Life Membership to Golf NSW.
Her involvement with women’s golf through WGNSW and the Australian Ladies Golf Union saw her further recognised in 2005 with a Distinguished Long Service Award by the NSW Sports Federation.
Mrs McWilliam was a Life Member of Bonnie Doon Golf Club and a Patron of the Australian Golf Heritage Society (AGHS).
