Words from Bruce Nairn – Life Member of Golf NSW

My good friend Max Doherty passed away recently in Hospital on the Central Coast. Max was one of the top junior golfers in NSW in the early 1950’s. He was one of six juniors who joined Bexley Golf Club in 1952.

Max won the NSW Junior Championship at Long Reef Golf Club in 1956, beating amongst others Bruce Devlin, with scores of 72, 73 – 145. Max’s achievements were considerable, winning the Bexley Club Championship on 11 occasion’s from 1953 – 1977. He also won the St Michael’s Championship in 1963.

Max’s best years were probably 1962 and 1963, when he won the NSW Foursomes Championship and the Lake Macquarie Foursomes with Bruce Nairn. He also won the Killara Shield with Harry Berwick in the 1962 representing St. Michael’s Golf Club. He was runner up in the Lake Macquarie Championship that year to Waratah’s Ken Johnstone. Max had Junior Pennant wins over Bruce Crampton in the early 1950’s, when Crampton was the “boy wonder” of NSW golf. He was an exceptional golfer.

Max is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lyn and children, Julie Ann, Greg and Wayne and 8 grandchildren.
