It is with much sadness that Golf SA notes the passing of Bill Holmesby, a great friend to golf in South Australia. Bill was a Councillor on the South Australian Golf Association (SAGA) from 1975 to 1993. His interests also extended to various other committees including Junior (1976-1981), Course Rating & Handicapping (1977-1988), Rules & Amateur Status (1982-1993), Country Committee (1989-1993) as well as the Executive & Finance (1989-1991). His golfing roots were established at the Port Augusta Golf Club and the Northern Golf Group. Not only did Bill love golf but he was also accorded Life Membership of the Payneham Bowling Club. He was also known to be a decent baseball player. One of the most enduring tasks that Bill performed was to hand-write the SAGA results sheets for its various tournaments and events. Each results sheet was immaculately written in calligraphy. He did this for over a quarter of a century. Some of these results sheets are preserved amongst the Golf SA archives. Bill also took on the role of Official Starter for the South Australian Open The Eagle Blue, the West End Open and the Ford SA Open. Sadly, Bill s passing came only a short time after the passing of his wife Bonnie. They had recently celebrated their 72nd Wedding Anniversary. A gentleman amongst gentlemen describes Bill.
