Defending men's champion David Micheluzzi has kept alive his chance of back-to-back wins in the Victorian Amateur at Huntingdale Golf Club, but the defending women's champion Stephanie Bunque is out.
Micheluzzi, 22, moved into the quarter-finals after winning both his contests in the matchplay portion today.
Metropolitan’s Micheluzzi dismissed Royal Melbourne’s Darcy Brereton 3 and 1 in the morning session then overcame Ryan Thomas of Yarra Yarra four and three in the afternoon. He is the top-seeded remaining player after this week’s strokeplay winner, Sydney’s Christopher Fan, was beaten in the first round of matchplay this morning.
Micheluzzi has had a sensational 2018 in which he was runner-up in the national amateur championship in Perth and the equal-top amateur at the Emirates Australian Open in Sydney.
The Victorian is ranked the No. 10 amateur in the world, a past winner of the Master of the Amateurs, and is expected to turn professional sometime next year. “I played OK in the morning but much better in the afternoon,’’ he said afterward. “Kept it in play.”
He will play Konrad Ciupek of Victoria in tomorrow's quarter-final.
New Zealander Jordan Woodall was an impressive winner this afternoon, eight and six over Curtis Lawrence of Victoria, while 2017 Australian Amateur champion Matias Sanchez of Victoria was ousted by Andre Lautee of Kingston Heath, four and two.
Meanwhile in the women’s draw, Bunque was second in the strokeplay section but was beaten one-up by teenager Hye Park of Queensland in the matchplay.
Port Phillip Amateur winner Min Yoon of South Korea is continuing her dominance of the women’s championship, beating Jen Goh of Singapore four and three today. The 15-year-old Yoon will meet New Zealand’s Siyi Keh in a quarter-final tomorrow.
Overseas players have a strong hand in the women’s quarter-finals, with Yuka Saso of the Philippines, the 2018 Asian Games gold medallist, beating veteran Victorian Sue Wooster three and two today.
Western Australians Kirsten Rudgeley and Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, 16, both recorded strong wins in their round of 16 matches and look well-placed. “I played steady golf and didn’t do much wrong,’’ said Hinson-Tolchard. “It’s the first time I have played the event, it’s been such a great week.’’
The 15-year-old Gold Coast sensation Park, who plays out of Royal Pines, also is into the quarter-finals and sure to create some interest.
