2014 Champions Day- News & Results

APIA Veteran’s Golf Classic concludes on a high

The 2014 APIA Veterans Golf Classic concluded on a high today with the ‘Champions Day’ held at the picturesque Novotel Forest Resort Creswick.

Over the month of October, hundreds of players from throughout the state participated across fourteen different clubs at a total of nineteen qualifying events as part of the annual Victorian Seniors Festival conducted by the Department of Health.

The pair’s fortunate enough to take home the winning prize at the respective club events, secured an invitation to compete in today’s champions day along with a night’s stay at the Novotel Resort the night prior.

The Novotel Forest layout once home to the Victorian PGA Championship, is a stern test for golfers of all ability. The fairways are carved in and amongst the dense bush and natural vegetation of the surrounding local forest environment which ensures any errant shots from the tee or fairway are often heavily penalized.

Players this morning were greeted with pleasant conditions which was reflected in the scoring. With a place within the field of the 2015 Victorian Open Pro-am at stake, the competition was fierce to claim overall honours.

In the end, three pairs were to finish on the fantastic score of forty five stableford points with the winners Peter Lutton and Phil Mackenzie scraping home on a countback to claim the top prize.by the slimmest of margins.

Lutton and Mackenzie who qualified for today through the Wonthaggi club event, finished strong over the closing stretch to edge out John Dineen and Peter Tymmsen on a countback who qualified through the Garfield leg of the club stage.

Not to be forgotten were Laurie Atwell and John Leefe, who came through the Goonawarra event and could consider themselves a little unlucky missing out on a countback for the two major prizes

Once again a great initiative by the Department of Health and the Victorian Seniors Festival saw a wonderful program of golf events take place this year

Many thanks should also be given to naming rights sponsor Apia for their support of the event along with the Novotel Forest Resort for providing competitors with the opportunity to play on such a fantastic and unique course whilst also generously providing accommodation for this year’s players.
