Stephen Valentine and Sue Lush have been crowned champions at the 2019 Gardiners Run Senior Amateur.
An excellent field of 63 men and 12 women converged to the Gardiners layout today with the course presenting in warm and breezy conditions.
Valentine, a member of Kew, produced an one-under-par 71 to win the championship, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 10th. He now moves into the outright lead in the 2019 Doug Bachli rankings with today being his first victory of the season.
Wayne Phillips (Yering Meadows) edged out Malcom Barnes (Neangar Park) on a countback for second with the pair finished two shots back on 73.
The overall nett section saw a runaway winner with perennial handicap champion Ignatius Duivenvoorden shooting a magnificent 61 nett. The 15 handicapper from Yarram produced five birdies on his way to a five shot victory. David Stevens (Yering Meadows) finished runner-up with a 65 nett off a handicap of 11.
Local member Lush proved dominant once again in the women’s champion taking home the scratch stableford trophy for a remarkable fourth time. With home knowledge advantage, she finished on 28 points for a seven shot victory over Jen Le Cerf (Clifton Springs).
The women’s stableford was decided by a countback with Cheryl Kelly (Devilbend) edging out Saowapa McDowall (Growling Fog Ladies GC) after the pair finished on 38 points.

The next seniors event will be held in March for the popular Alpine Senior Masters held at Bright Country Club.
