Viitakangas wins Men�s & Oh takes Women�s 2012 Port Phillip Titles

Queensland’s Simon Viitakangas has won the Men’s title while Victorian State player Su-Hyun Oh took out the Women’s Championship at the 2012 Port Phillip Amateur following the final 36-holes played at the Commonwealth Golf Club on Sunday 16 December.

Hailing from Robina Woods on the Gold Coast, 19-year-old Viitakangas confirmed his emerging status as one of Australia’s players with a final round two-under 71 for a four round total of 287 to win by a solitary stroke from overnight leader Brady Watt from Royal Perth.

After leading into the final round, the Western Australian closed with a three-over 76 to finish at 288. Indooroopilly’s Kevin Marques fired a fi with overnight leader Brady Watt from Western Australia a further stroke behind on 288 after a final round 76.  

16-year-old Oh from Metropolitan claimed the Women’s title with a great final day at Commonwealth beginning with a four-under 70 morning round followed by a 76 in the afternoon including an eagle at the 322 metre 11th after holing out with a wedge.

Oh’s four round total of 289 won the inaugural Women’s Port Phillip title by three strokes from fellow State player Grace Lennon who closed with a 75 to finish at 292. Talented Western Australian Minjee Lee finis  

After early morning rain, cleared to an overcast but fine day, scoring was made difficult by a gusty south-westerly wind on the tree-lined layout.

Following the completion of the Port Phillip Amateur, the leading 31 men’s players with 72-hole scores of 307 or better and Commonwealth’s Frazer Droop who survived a sudden death play-off involving five players on 308 and the leading 16 women’s players with scores of 319 or better will now progress to the match play rounds of the respective Men’s and Women’s Victorian Amateur Championships.

The match play rounds will begin at Yarra Yarra Golf Club on Monday 17 December with the men’s first round matches to commence from the 1st and 10th tees from 7.30am while the women’s first round matches will commence from the 1st and 10th tees from 12noon.

Both Viitakangas and Victorian State player James McMillan from Royal Melbourne are unavailable to progress to the match play rounds due to competing at this week’s Australian PGA Tour School that starts on Wednesday.

The 2012 Men’s and Women’s Victorian Amateur Championship culminates with the 36-hole finals on Wednesday 19 December at Yarra Yarra. The morning rounds will commence at 7.30am with the afternoon rounds scheduled for 12noon.
