Day one of the 2017 Victorian Mid-Amateur Championship has been completed with nearly 150 players enjoying The National (Long Island Course) & Cranbourne Golf Clubs. This year’s championship is being played simultaneously over the two courses to avoid any handicap ballots that have occurred in previous years.
Andrew Villinger (The National) will take the overnight lead in the Men’s Championship after an impressive -4 (68) round at Cranbourne. Villinger expressed that his putting had made his round. In fact, Andrew mentioned that he only hit two greens in regulation on his front nine for one under par. Andrew will take a two shot lead from Stephen Rotherham (Neangar Park) who fired a round of 70.
Sue Wooster is edging closer to a hat-trick of Victorian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championships after her round of +2 (74), also at Cranbourne Golf Club. The National member leads by eight from Jo Webberley (Southern). Sue’s round included birdies on hole 7 & the difficult 17th.
Justin Ryan from Quarry Hill produced the best B Division score with a round of 76 at The National (Long Island Course). Hot on his heels is a group of four players which sets up an interesting final round for the B Division title.
Players will switch course for tomorrow’s second and final round with both fields commencing via a Multi-Tee Start at 8am.
