Steffanie Vogel is the 2018 Victorian Women’s Country Champion after a super display of golf at Yarrawonga.

Vogel defeated Judy Langford (Wodonga) in the final 5 and 4 after taking down Amy Leeson (Bunniyong) 4 and 3 in her morning semi-final.

The two youngest members of the championship did battle in front of some keen followers. Vogel started slowly in her morning match with Leeson jumping to a 2 up lead advantage after just 5 holes. Leeson held onto her lead to make the turn at 1 up.

Vogel produced some scintillating golf on the back nine, winning 5 of the next 6 holes to walk away with a 4 and 3 victory and becoming the first player into the final.

The second semi-final saw number 1 qualifier and Betty Kernot trophy winner Helen Pascoe (Buninyong) take on Wodonga’s Judy Langford. It was Langford who would start the better, gaining a 3 up lead after just 4 holes of play.

Pascoe and Langford exchanged pars in a great display of golf on the picturesque Murray course. Pascoe dropped a long putt on 8 for birdie to get the margin back to 2.

Langford continued her par run before holing a huge putt on 12 for her second birdie of the day which gave her what looked to be a match winning lead.

Being 4 down with only 6 holes to play, Pascoe knew she needed to find something and winning the next 3 holes brought her right back into the game. It proved to be too little to late as the pair halved 16 and Langford took the 17th, giving her a 2 and 1 victory and booked her place against Vogel for the afternoon clash.

After a quick bite to eat, players would once again tackle the Murray course to determine who would be crowned the 2018 Victorian Women’s Country Champion.

Five straight pars and a birdie from Vogel gave her an early 3 up lead. Despite some solid golf from Langford, Vogel would prove too strong to run away with a 5 and 4 victory and her first Country Championship.

Vogel represented Victoria earlier in the year and her win at Yarrawonga continues her excellent run of form.
