The inaugural Stuart Appleby Leongatha Junior Open kicked off today at South Gippsland’s Leongatha Golf Club. Torrential rain overnight and hail early this morning made ground conditions heavy but the sunshine coupled with a stiff southerly this afternoon assisted in drying the course. With that said, the gusty wind provided its own set of challenges to the competitors on thetree-lined layout where accuracy from the tee is essential.
Toby Walker is leading the charge in the overall boys section after carding a solid round of 74 in the difficult conditions. 17-year-old Walker managed his way around the course with nines of 38 and 36 for his four over-par tally. The Victorian Junior State team representative will take a comfortable five shot advantage over Nathan Page and James Walker heading into tomorrow’s final round. Blair Christie sits in outright fourth following a round of 84 while Andrew Love and Cody Cuthbert are placed a further shot in arrears.
Cody Cuthbert holds the lead in the overall nett section after a round of 75 from his 7 handicap. The Commonwealth member will sleep with a one stroke buffer over Harry Adams and Toby Walker when he tees it up tomorrow morning.
