Walker wins at Lonsdale

Ray Walker has won this year’s Lonsdale Senior Amateur following the second round play today.

Walker fired an opening round 76 before shooting a stellar one-under par 70 this morning to take home the 36-hole title. Walker struggled on his opening nine going out in two-over 38. However, the Chirnside Park member reconciled and finished in style with birdies at 16, 17, and 18 for a three-under par inward nine to claim victory by three strokes.

Walker was recently named in the six man team that will contest the annual walking stick trophy in this year’s NSW Senior Amateur Championship.

Round one leader, Greg Welsh (Colac), finished with a steady 75 today to sit in outright second on a two round total of 149. West Gippsland golfer, Jeff Hasthorpe (Trafalgar), was a further three shots adrift after rounds of 78 and 74.

Alan Hunter from 13th Beach took the honours in the nett section by a barnstorming seven shots after carding rounds of 69 and 64 off a handicap of 10. Hunter was the only player to break their handicap for both rounds of the competition.

Commonwealth member and 2013 Yarra Courses Senior Amateur handicap champion, Graham Bone, continued his solid play this year finishing in second place on 140. Ignatius Duivenvoorden was placed third also on 140 nett.

Golf Victoria wishes to thank the Lonsdale Golf Club and volunteers for their assistance over the duration of the event.
