Warren nabs fourth consecutive title

Gin Gin’s Scott Warren has made history at the Queensland Men’s Country Week Championship after recording a fourth consecutive victory at Virginia Golf Club on Monday.

Rounds of 74-71 for a 36-hole total of 145, secured a five-shot win over runner-up Adam Hawkins (Palm Meadows) who backed up a disappointing 82 start with the lowest tournament round of 68.

Warren becomes the first player to win consecutive titles in the history of the event and matches Peter Wouter’s record of four victories in 2001, 2002, 2004 and most recently in 2011.

“I look forward to the event every year – win, lose or draw, I look forward to playing,” Warren said.

“The course was in great condition. I struggled with distance control, but it was a pleasure to play. Thanks to everyone involved that made it a great couple of days.”

Overnight leader Anthony Timms (City) and Simon Tooman (Noosa) shared third place with a 36-hole total of 151.

John Anderson (Sandy Gallop) claimed the B Grade Championship with rounds of 86-85, followed by Troy Coates (Bundaberg), while Keith Herrmann (Bundaberg) won the C Grade Championship with a two-shot deficit from Albert Horsfall (Mt Coolum). John Smith (Craignish) claimed honours in the D Grade Championship with a five-shot victory over Michael Brady (Biggenden).

In the senior’s event, Doug Westlake of Gympie narrowly defeated Gray Tostee of Palm Meadows with rounds of 85-82 for the title.

In the Fourball event, Sandy Gallop pair Albert Horsfall and John Anderson combined for 45 points to pip Toowoomba visitors Ray Cole and Russell Dennis by the narrowest of margins. The third place pair were also from up the range with Les Richards (City GC) and Bruce Spendelove (Toowoomba) returning 44 points also.

Golf Queensland would like to thank host courses Virginia Golf Club and Keperra Golf and Country Club for graciously giving up their courses for the event, as well as the green staff and bar staff for their assistance. Thank you to major sponsor City Golf Club Toowoomba for their continued sponsorship of the state championship.
