Webb 14th as Chun wins US Open

Karrie Webb recorded another top-15 finish as young South Korean In Gee Chung won her first-ever major championship at the United States Women's Open today.

Webb closed with an impressive 69, one-under par, to finish even-par for the tournament and tied for 14th.

She had a share of the lead after a first-round 66, but faltered with 72 and 73 on Friday and Saturday. But the 40-year-old was still by far the best of the half dozen Australians in the field at Lancaster Country Club.

Chung, just 20, is not even an LPGA Tour member. She earned her place in the field as the No. 1 player on the Korean Tour last year, but she was brilliant with a fourth-round 66 today to blow away the field.

Playing in the second-last group, she missed a shortish putt to save par at the difficult final hole and conceded a share of the lead to her compatriot Amy Yang. But Yang could not make par to force a playoff; she pulled her drive into the left rough, had to lay up short of the green, and missed a four-metre par putt to lose by one shot.

She becomes the fourth Korean winner of the most prestigious women's event on the calendar in the past five years.
