Shelly Shin has won one of two Karrie Webb Series scholarships this, but the second remains up for grabs.
Heading into the West Australian Strokeplay at Lake Karrinyup from Monday, the final round of the 14-event series, only Julienne Soo can prevent Hannah Green from winning the second.
Sydneysider Shin, 16, a Golf Australia national squad member, has an unassailable lead with 771 points after a dominant year including victories at the Victorian Strokeplay and Macquarie Amateur events.
Perth’s Green, 18, also in the GA national squad, had a win at the Dunes Medal en route to 585.16 points. She could be caught by Victorian pair Soo (551.58) and Jo Charlton (506.33), but only the former is heading to Perth.
The top two placegetters in the Karrie Webb Series win a trip to the US Open to watch Webb play – and stay with her — as well as a $10,000 scholarship towards their golf paid by Webb herself.
It also wins them exemptions into the 2016 Women’s Australian Open.
But for all the perks, the exposure to arguably Australia’s greatest ever golfer in tournament mode – and her ongoing mentoring support – are undoubtedly the top prizes.
Previous winners of the scholarships include Golf Australia rookie squad members Minjee Lee and Su Oh, both of whom were thrilled to be able to get to know Webb.
The series, now in its eighth year, helps promote women’s golf in Australia and also helps recognise Webb’s contribution to Australian golf.
