Weekend preview: Golf Australia/AIS squad members Matt Griffin and Josh Younger head into the final rounds of this weekend s Player s Amateur tournament in a healthy position as equal first round leaders with American John Tyler Griffin. Griffin and Younger finished their opening rounds carding a five-under-par 65 to share the top of the leaderboard with John Griffin (no relation to Matt). The tournament is being held at Belfair Golf Clubin South Carolina where the East Course is being used for only the second time in the event s nine year history. The normally used West Course is undergoing significant maintenance and reconstruction work. Queensland s Brett Rankin was a shot behind the leaders with a round of 66 while Western Australia s Matt Jager finished his first round two shots off the pace. San Diego Junior Masters Western Australian Whitney Hillier has prevailed at the San Diego Junior Masters, finishing four strokes clear of American Danielle Frasier and Puerto Rico s Patricia Garcia. Hillier shot rounds of 70 and 75 in the two-round event at Carlton Oaks Golf Club, giving her a confidence boost as the Callaway Junior World Championships are being held at the same course next week.
