Jubilee’s Greg Allen and local Joanna Flaherty (Port Fairy) are the leaders after round 1 of the Westcoast Open Amateur.
In perfect playing conditions this afternoon, Allen recorded 3 birdies en route to a 3 under par round of 69 to be leading the men’s field by a mere stroke. The duo of Caleb Perry (Warrnambool) and Terry Vogel (Cobram Barooga) are hot on Allen’s heals, both carding two under par rounds of 72.
Across in the women’s field, Flaherty is leading the pack with a day best of 3 over par 75 off the stick. The captain of the recently crowned division 1 women’s metropolitan pennant team is ahead by 2 shots from last years’ winner Jessica Pickwick (Kilmore) who returned a 77 around the coastline course.
Newly introduced in 2017 as a Victorian Men’s & Women’s Ranking event, the Westcoast Open Amateur will be played over 72 holes with 18 each on Friday and Sunday at Warrnambool, with 36 holes played in between on Saturday at Port Fairy. The men’s & women’s winners will receive a conditional amateur exemption into the 2019 Vic Open at 13th Beach Golf Links.
Round 2 will start at 7:30am tomorrow morning at Port Fairy Golf Club.
